Mailing lists
The mailing lists of interest to VASC members fall into two main categories: administrative lists (e.g., ri-people) and seminar lists (e.g., vasc-seminar). Normally, when you arrive at RI, you are automatically added to the department- and school-level administrative lists. For the vasc-members list, robotics-students-verbose, and seminar lists, you may need to actively subscribe by sending an e-mail to <listname>-request@ri (e.g., vasc-seminar-request@ri). If that doesn't work, you can find out who actually receives the request e-mail using the unix program “checkaddr” (details).
Following the reasonable person principle, you should avoid sending e-mail to these mailing lists, especially the ones with wide distribution such as scs-all (more on mailing list ethics). The exceptions to this rule are vasc-members and robotics-students-verbose, which are more informal lists.

Newsgroups
Newsgroups can be accessed by any news reader (help). In recent years, the vasc newsgroup readership has fallen off significantly, so if you have an urgent or important message, you may be better off using the vasc-members mailing list.
