VASC Seminar Announcement ========================= Date: Tuesday, 11/9/99 Time: 1:30-2:30 Place: Smith Hall 2nd Floor Common Area Speaker: Jin Li Microsoft Research, Beijing http://www.research.microsoft.com/users/jinl/ Title: Compression Research in Microsoft Research China Abstract: Compression is a core technology in multimedia application. Good compression algorithm is highly desired to efficiently store and transmit large amount of multimedia data. The talk will be a showcase of compression technologies developed in Microsoft Research China. In especial, a JPEG 2000 image browser over the internet and a Lumigraph compressor will be shown. ========================================================================= Biography Dr. Jin Li joins Microsoft Research, China after an active 10-year period, during which he published over 50 technical papers in various journals and conferences relating to image compression and multimedia communication. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. in Dept. of Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1994, when he was 23 years old. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a Research Associate at the University of Southern California. Later on, from 1996-1999, he was a member of the technical staff at the Sharp Laboratories of America (SLA). In the last two years, he is an active contributor for the ISO JPEG2000 project. His work on rate-distortion optimized embedding has been incorporated into the JPEG 2000 VM, and has won him the 1998Young Investigator Award from SPIE Visual Communication and Image Processing. His other contribution in JPEG 2000 includes wavelet visual weighting, visual progressive coding and visual masking. Dr. Li is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation. He is a senior member of IEEE.
