VASC Seminar Announcement ========================= Date: Monday, 5/14/01 Time: 3:45-4:50 Place: NSH 3002 Speaker: Cameron Riviere, Robotics Insitute, CMU Title: Accuracy Enhancement for Microsurgery The next level of microsurgical practice will require finer position control than unassisted surgeons can attain. Approaches such as telerobotics have been developed, but these are expensive and rather obtrusive for the surgeon. The solution which my students and I propose is a hand-held instrument with active compensation of positioning error. This scenario offers considerable promise but raises several challenging issues, including adequate sensing and actuation within a sufficiently small package, and real-time discrimination between desired and undesired movement. I will summarize recent progress toward this goal, and briefly describe what remains to be done.
