VASC Seminar Announcement ========================= Date: Tuesday, 5/8/01 Time: 3:30-4:40 Place: NSH 3002 Speaker: Pragyana K Mishra, Robotics Institute, CMU Title: Building Smart Matter Diagnostic Environments Abstract: Intelligent environments of the future will have large networks of various types of sensors. These sensors capture various events and disturbances in their own special ways. The amount of data collected from such a network of sensors is not only varied but large. I propose a hierarchical approach of clustering and selecting sensor data to fuse information for monitoring and diagnostics. My work at Xerox, PARC on diagnostic systems for processing vibration data from distributed sensors discusses the problems that most researchers in the areas of Smart Matter Diagnostics are facing today. Physical phenomena manifest in different modalities for different sensors and it very interesting to study how these varied data can be fused for event monitoring, failure prediction and, remote diagnosis and repair. Several concepts such as gabor transformations for analyzing non-stationary signals, calculation of cross entropy to align signals, learning vector quantization for classifying features have been used to cluster data from sensors randomly attached to machines. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
